Medicine Nurse

The Austin Vet Specialists is growing. Having opened in May 2022, we see an ever-growing and exciting caseload of mostly small animals with the occasional exotic and zoo animal (think lion, capybara, orangutan). And now, Internal Medicine is coming to The Austin!

 

With the addition of Internal Medicine in April 2023, a unique opportunity exists for a Medicine Nurse to lead our new Medicine nursing team.

 

 

About Medicine Nurse:

We are looking for an experienced Vet Nurse, ideally with prior referral experience, to lead our Medicine nursing team and join our Senior Nursing Team.

 

The Internal Medicine department will open in April 2023 and consist of two board-certified Internal Medicine specialists, two medicine interns, the Medicine Nurse and an awesome team of rotating nurses.

 

The daily work will revolve around the participation in the small animal internal medicine service as well as providing collaborative care of the patients in hospital. This will include coordinating the patient care within the Internal Medicine department, the anaesthesia and preparation of Internal Medicine patients and supporting the nursing team as they rotate through the Internal Medicine Department. Additionally, this role will ensure exceptional client communication and the building of strong relationships with referring vets.

 

Besides the clinical work, this role is responsible for formulating and delivering nursing education programs within the Internal Medicine department, as well as fostering a culture that supports and promotes quality improvement and innovative models of care. This role works close with the Head Nurse to ensure quality through the assessment and evaluation of clinical procedures within the nursing team.

 

 

About The Austin:

We are young but ambitious with lofty standards. Our custom-built hospital (900m2) is designed around a synergistic approach to patient care. Between specialists in Internal Medicine, Surgery and Radiology, we work as one team to ensure outstanding patient care and exceptional customer service.

 

Our hospital includes a large reception with dedicated client care services, surgery wing, internal medicine wing, radiology wing (including new 64 slice CT scanner), large central treatment area with intensive care facilities, and much more including access to rehab/physio, 3T MRI scanner and PET-CT scanner.

 

Our hospital has all the instruments necessary to enable our medicine team to relish their chosen careers, and flourish. This includes a specifically designed medicine wing with endoscopy, fluoroscopy, Holter monitoring, oncology services, all in-house blood gas/biochemistry/haematology machines, mechanical ventilation, invasive blood pressure monitoring and much more.

The ideal candidate will have the following skills and expertise:

  • A minimum of 4 years veterinary practice and/or hospital environment, preferably in a specialist centre

  • Completed formal qualifications in Veterinary Nursing, Certificate IV Veterinary Nursing or higher

  • Demonstrated current advanced veterinary nursing knowledge with demonstrated experience as a mentor

  • Ability to mentor and train staff in clinical competencies

  • Ability to provide a high level of emergency care to all animals within the organisation

  • Excellent animal handling and triaging skills

  • Competent in the management of complex clinical cases requiring substantial professional experience and initiative

The role is permanent and fulltime (38 hours over 4 days per week) with a rotating roster. Financial loading and other incentives apply providing an attractive salary ($32-45/hr) which will grow with you as you develop your career.
